It’s been a while since we posted an update about our Trainee Estimator Jack Deacon, who started with us in early 2015 fresh out of university at 22 years old. Jack has since undertaken a HNC Quantity Surveying Course once a week at college as well as working with us full time and learning on the job, gaining hands-on experience that he has found invaluable.
How time flies… it’s now two years down the line and we are very proud to report that Jack has just passed all his exams! He even passed with flying colours, gaining 80% – an “A” grade in his graded unit assignment. The HNC course covered units such as CAD 2D, construction technology, estimating, quantitative building studies, quantity surveying practice and site administration.
Jack stated:
“The Graded Unit was an individual project where you had to do a complete take off of quantities on a one-story building from the ground works, foundations and in situ concrete up to the structure and external coverings.
We had to build up our own specification for the job and quantify and present as if we were pricing the full job to a house builder.
The course has given me a broader insight in to the industry, other trades and other jobs within construction, not just surveying and estimating”.
The hard work doesn’t stop there however, as Jack will be continuing his learning and progressing with his studies by completing a further two years at university which will give him a BSc degree in Quantity Surveying. Again, he will be attending one day a week throughout the university term.
At Curtis Moore we are fully committed to the development of our staff and over the time that Jack has been with us we’ve noticed a passion and enthusiasm to learn and progress within the company. We are pleased to be able to assist Jack in the next step of his learning and wish him the very best of luck in achieving his degree.
