Curtis Moore acted as principal contractor on the refurbishment of the Odeon Cinema at Glasgow’s Springfield Quay working direct with Odeon Cinemas in conjunction with NBDA Architects. The Glasgow Quay is a busy, active area close to the city centre full of restaurants, a casino, bingo, bowling, cinema and hotel. The cinema was built in 1996 but since then the original roofing system had deteriorated and was in urgent need of a timely replacement. This refurbishment project involved the removal of the existing external profiled metal roof complete with existing insulation, support grid and VCL, lowering to the ground and safely removing from site and replacing with new insulation and the aluminium Kalzip standing seam system.

The roof was 5500m2 with the roof sheets being 53.5m long and curved. The sheets had to be site rolled within the active car park which meant we had to ensure this was conducted in an area that would cause least disruption and was clearly cordoned off.

Curtis Moore went through a preselection process against a number of standing seam system manufacturers and installers, and were chosen by NBDA Architects based on trust, cost-competitiveness and portfolio of quality work carried out in the past.

As principal contractor, there were numerous additions to our duties which include the creation of a construction phase Health and Safety plan, F10 notification, providing welfare on site, creating a transport plan, arranging permits as well as records of inspections and registers. The cinema and surrounding restaurants/bowling/hotel and car park remained open throughout the duration of the project. All whilst there was a strict time schedule in place.

This project presented a number of challenges, one of which being that it was a refurbishment as opposed to a new build. After stripping the existing roof, we realised that additional steelwork had to be incorporated to suit the new Kalzip system.

As the Cinema remained open throughout the duration of the project, extreme care was taken with regards to health and safety and environmental issues.  We had to ensure minimal disruption to the public and this included extremely low volumes of noise whilst working.

Working in a busy environment with large numbers of people surrounding the project every day meant heightened attention to health and safety and environmental issues was critical.

Jim Hamilton, Contracts Manager at Curtis Moore stated:

“The re-roofng process began in the early autumn and we’re pleased to confirm that after four wet and windy months, the Odeon Glasgow Quay remained open and fully protected throughout the time we took to strip out the old steel roof and build-up material and install the replacement Kalzip® roof. The work was achieved with minimal inconvenience to the cinema’s patrons – and during the project, NBDA Architects asked us undertake a very similar project installing a replacement Kalzip® roof on the nearby Hollywood Bowl building.”

This project is a great example of a successful, complex refurbishment project. Despite the restrictions of working within an active, busy environment open to the public, Curtis Moore still managed to complete the project on time, within budget, to a high standard and most importantly safely with minimal disruption to the public. The large curved Kalzip sheets look excellent and have completely transformed the aesthetic of the building (which can be clearly seen from the motorway above).  The client is delighted with Curtis Moore’s performance on this project and due to the success of the cinema we were awarded the adjacent project – Hollywood Bowl.

Paul Clare from NBDA Architects stated:

“Curtis Moore undertook the refurbishment works at the Odeon Cinema, Glasgow Quay.  This involved the removal of the old external profiled roof and replacing with a new Kalzip standing seam system.

From the outset, Curtis Moore were very professional in their approach to tendering, design, procurement and installation.  The project was managed and products installed to a very high standard whilst also placing a great level of importance to health and safety and the surrounding environment.

Curtis Moore ensured there was very minimal disruption to the public which was difficult considering the cinema remained open throughout the duration of the works.  Furthermore, they managed to site roll the extremely large Kalzip sheets within an active car park – again, causing minimal disruption to the public and ensuring health & safety was top priority. We are very happy with Curtis Moore’s performance on this project and have since appointed them for the follow up project – Hollywood Bowl – this, like the Odeon was completed to exceptional standards”

Curtis Moore were recognised for the success of this project by being awarded the ‘Best Refurbishment Project’ at the 2017 Kalzip Awards.
