Last month our Estimator, Jack Deacon, graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BSc Quantity Surveying. A fantastic achievement in its own right, but even more so when you consider Jack combined studying part-time for the last 4 years alongside working here at Curtis Moore.
With no previous experience in the construction industry, Jack joined Curtis Moore’s Estimating and Sales department in November 2014, fresh out of the University of Strathclyde with his first degree – a BA (Hons) Marketing and Business Law. As part of his professional training and development, he achieved his CSCS skills card and gained vital practical experience on site working alongside our experienced labour teams, installing roof and wall systems. Fuelled with a desire to grow his knowledge and skills further, and with the full backing of the company, he embarked on a 2-year HNC in Quantity Surveying. Not content with his HNC, Jack went on to complete a further 2 years of study at Glasgow Caledonian University which resulted in him achieving his second degree, this time a BSc Quantity Surveying. On graduation day he found himself being presented with his degree certificate by none other than Scottish music legend Annie Lennox OBE, in her capacity as Chancellor of the University!
For the first 3 years of his studies, he juggled coursework with working in our Estimating department one day a week, increasing to 1.5 days a week in his 4th and final year. During that time, Jack gained significant experience in project estimating, gradually working on more complex projects. He is now working full time in our estimating department, having gained strong experience of theory-based knowledge alongside practical experience.
Commenting on his Curtis Moore journey so far, Jack said “Balancing college then university, along with work, has definitely been challenging but very rewarding. I’ve been supported the whole way by all levels of staff; from our Directors and Management Team through to the operatives on site. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a great team with a wealth of expert knowledge and experience, who I can learn from and develop with, and be part of a company that actively encourages staff training and development.”
We’re immensely proud of what Jack has achieved during his time so far at Curtis Moore and we look forward to him having a long and successful career with us. Well done Jack, a great example of hard work and dedication paying off!
