Curtis Moore were thrilled to have been awarded the project of roofing and cladding for the new £37 million Alford Community Campus in Aberdeen. Delivered by hub North Scotland, this project has now been completed and has been nominated for Community Development Project of the Year.
This project was designed to amalgamate the existing Alford Academy and Alford Primary School into one main campus. This includes nursery, primary and secondary education facilities alongside public services for use within the wider community.
For Alford Community Campus, Curtis Moore were asked to supply the roofing and cladding for the whole campus. This consisted of 9,000m2 of Standing Seam Roofing, around 350m2 of single ply membrane roofing and around 2,500m2 of Timber and Trespa rainscreen cladding.
The project began in June 2014, and was completed in time for pupils returning this autumn. Opened by pop star and local girl Emeli Sande, the campus highlights their commitment to communal activities and developing local people. Alford Community Campus was provided with more than just a large educational space, with many additional facilities for use by other community groups, including an internal sports hall, dance studio, theatre, community library and swimming pool.
Similar to previous contracts undertaken by Curtis Moore, the new Alford Community Campus has a pool which requires an acoustic build up over this section of the building. This is to ensure acoustic performance and to combat corrosion and condensation which can often happen in the atmosphere of a heated pool.
Curtis Moore have had to face some challenges when tackling this project. We ended up working on the roofing and cladding elements at the same time due to unforeseen programme restraints, and of course had to combat the adverse weather in this area throughout the winter months.
The Community Campus will be the hub of the area, providing pupils, parents and everyone in the local community with a range of great services and creative outlets for them to enjoy all year round. We are delighted to have been part of that.
